Complications :: DTAC Short Story Spoileralert

February 8th, 1979

Snow fell gently across Hogsmeade Village as we made our way down the road in our carriage. Storefronts were decorated with heart garlands and signs on the windows announcing their Valentine’s Day sales and specials. The Village filled me with nostalgia for a life that had ended less than a year ago.

The Marauders thought celebrations were in order before parenthood hit each of us like dominoes, knowing our lives were about to get much busier. We decided that the best place to do that was the one that saw us many times throughout our teenage years: The Three Broomsticks.

We sent Hagrid an owl inviting him to join us. Our detention days were usually spent helping him in the Forbidden Forest, and naturally with how often we got detention we ended up bonding. His company was absolutely essential to bid farewell to a mostly carefree life.

Our carriage stopped in front of the inn, and Remus, ever the gentleman, carefully got out first, extending his hand to me.
“Let me help you, love.”

“Why thank you,” I smiled, a light blush to my cheeks.

“Careful, there’s ice,” he helped me out, “there, and there, careful here.”

“I’m fine, Remus!” I chuckled, “I’m pregnant, not blind.” I smiled at him before taking a step onto the slick cobblestones; with a yelp I landed in his arms, thankful he held on to me.

“You were saying?” He smirked, and kissed my forehead, “you’re stubborn, you know?”

I placed my hand on my large tum, taking a deep breath as I stabilized myself.
“Yeah,” I grinned, “don’t act like you don’t like that in a woman.”

“Hey, lovebirds,” James exclaimed from the carriage, “I wanna have kids someday too, I can’t do that if my nads are frozen!”

“James!” Lily laughed, a blush on her cheeks.

“Not like the cold would change much,” Sirius quipped.

“Piss off,” James chuckled, punching him in the shoulder.

Noah rolled his eyes, smirking. He looked at Remus and I.
“Alright you two, out of the way; I’d like to warm up with a drink.”

“Wish I could say the same,” I pouted as Remus helped me step aside.

“Hey, you did that to yourself,” Peter said as he jumped out.

I stuck my tongue out at him.
“Just wait for next month, I’ll drink you under the table.”

“Mayhaps,” he straightened his cloak, “but with you out of the way I might just win this time.” He looked at everyone else, “drink competition, on me!”

“Good man!” James grinned as he got out, helping Lily afterward; he leaned close to her and kissed under her ear, “you don’t mind me having a few drinks, right?” He whispered as if not wanting the guys to hear.

She rolled her eyes and kissed his lips.
“Who knows when we’ll be together like this again?” She smiled at him and gave a coy shrug, “enjoy yourself, I’ll keep Morgan sober company.”

“You’re the best,” he kissed her back, and wrapped his arm around her waist to keep her steady on the ice patches.

Sirius hopped down, and with a controlled slip he turned to face the carriage and gave a slight bow before grinning up at Noah and extending his hand.
“Shall we?”

Noah gave a nod, taking his husband’s hand.
“We shall.” He exited and pulled Sirius towards him, kissing deeply.

“And they call us lovebirds,” Remus smirked.

Sirius ran his fingers through his hair, smirking at his friend.
“Can’t deny it, we’re pretty dang cute.”

I chuckled before wincing, my hands cradling my stomach.

“Are you alright, Mor?” Noah put a hand on my shoulder.

“I’m fine,” I nodded, “it happens.”
I took a deep breath as the cramp subsided, and straightened up.
“Come on, we don’t want to be late for the drinking competition,” I pointed my chin towards Pettigrew who was already walking through the door.

“Oi!” James exclaimed, leading Lily by the waist, “wait for us, don’t be so eager to lose!”

As we made our way inside the shrunken heads complained.

“Oh no, not you again!” “We thought we’d be over with you lot after graduation!” “No setting things on fire!”

“Oh give it a rest,” Peter flicked the last one, “it was one time.”

Past the heads, we were welcomed by the innkeeper, Madame Rosmerta.

“Oh look, my most profitable customers!” She laughed, embracing us each in a hug; she placed her hands on my belly, “you’re coming along nicely! How long you got?”

“Just a couple of weeks away from meeting our little pup,” I smiled.

Remus clenched his jaw and leaned in, whispering.
“Please don’t call him that.”

“Him?” I raised an eyebrow at him.

“Oh we’re having a boy?” Rosmerta prodded.

“We don’t know for sure,” I shook my head, “we wanted to keep it a surprise.”

She took a step back, hands on her hips, and studied my shape before chuckling.

“What?” Remus’ brow furrowed.

“Oh, nothing,” she waved her hands dismissively, “Hagrid has been expecting you all.”

She pointed towards him, sitting at the far corner booth taking up most of the seat, stools were placed on the outside of the table to fit us all. Hagrid waved enthusiastically.

He stood up to greet us, nearly knocking the table over.
“Blimey!” He exclaimed as we approached him, “you look like you’ve swallowed a pumpkin!”

“I feel like a pumpkin, too,” I embraced him in a giant hug, “it’s good to see you again Hagrid.”

“It’s good to see you all too,” he hugged me back for a moment, and motioned for everyone to sit before taking his place on the bench, “truth be told it’s been a bit dull around ol’ Hogwarts without you all.”

“I’m sure Filch is relieved,” Noah smirked.

“I think he might be bored, to tell ya the truth,” Hagrid chuckled.

I bit my cheek.
“Have you seen Regulus around?”

The half-giant shook his head.
“Used ta see him at the Quidditch matches but not even then now, spends most o’ his time in the common room.”

I sighed and nodded, sitting back on my chair; running gentle circles with my fingertips where the baby moved within me.

I thought back to the wedding, Regulus walking me down the aisle, disapparating in the midst of the reception. Multiple owls going unanswered, even Rose refused to deliver more.

“Rosmerta!” Peter exclaimed, beckoning her toward us, “pregnant lady’s bringing the mood down, bring us some firewhiskey and 5 goblets please.”

I blinked, not realizing my sadness was surrounding everyone else. Lily rubbed my back.

“Are you going to be alright?” She asked gently.

“I’ll be fine,” I said, wiping away a lone tear, “hormones.”

She gave me a nod, but I could tell in her eyes she knew much more than she wanted to let on.
“Two butterbeers please,” she smiled at Rosmerta.

“Coming right up,” she nodded before stepping over to the bar.

I looked at Remus, his hands clenched together under his nose as he sat deep in thought; brow furrowed still. I reached out to touch his arm, he shook his head.

“Don’t do that,” he murmured.

“Do what?”

“That,” he said, taking my hand and giving it a kiss, “don’t try to make me feel better with your powers, I’ll be fine.”

“Remus, I–”

“I know,” he nodded, “I know you worry about him like family, problem is that’s not how he sees it.”

“It’s more than that, you know I ha–”

“Had a vision,” he nodded, “the vision you refuse to tell me about.”

“Somethings are be–”

“Better left unsaid,” Remus nodded once more, letting go of my hand, “a common theme these days.”

My jaw clenched as I looked at him, trying to keep the sadness and anger within me contained. The tears pooling in my eyes stinging, as if they boiled too.

“Morgie,” Lily smiled at me, “would you take a walk with me? It’s getting awful stuffy in here.”

I nodded, grateful for the opportunity to slip away.

“Would you like me to go with you?” Remus asked without turning his gaze to us.

“Screw that mate!” Peter gave him a hard pat on the back, “you’re drinking with the big boys today!”

“We won’t be long,” Lily kept her kind demeanor, “might walk into Honeydukes for a bit, I’m craving sweets.”

Remus reached into his pocket and handed me three sickles.
“I’d like some chocolate, if that’s not too much trouble for you.”

“Not at all,” I took the currency, “anything for my husband.” I emphasized the words, hoping they’d pierce his jealousy; it was met with a quick “hm”.

Lily gently pulled on me to walk with her.

I bit my cheek once more, putting the sickles in my bag and turning towards the door.

“Hold our butterbeers, please,” Lily waved to Rosmerta as we left.
She laced her arm with mine as we walked down Hogsmeade.
“Honeymoon bubble burst already?”

I rolled my eyes.
“He feels threatened by Regulus’ mere existence, as if I didn’t vow my love for him just four months ago.”

Lily nodded.
“I mean, I can understand where he comes from; it’s obvious you care deeply for Regulus, many did say you were an ideal match the short time you dated,” she looked up to the sky, “however,” she continued, “everyone can see how much you love Remus, his self esteem just needs improving for him to see it himself.”

“I chose him,” my brow furrowed, “I married him, I’m carrying his child, what more proof does a man need?”

She gave me a sympathetic smile.
“It’s something he needs to work on from within, he’s blinded by self doubt- understandably, but I’m sure he’ll come along,” she said as we walked past Honeydukes.

“Um, where are we going?” I looked at her, bemused.

She turned and hailed a carriage before smirking.
“We’re going to see Reg.”

My eyebrows raised with excitement as a wide grin took over.
“Really?”

She opened the door and climbed in to help me up.
“You deserve closure, and he gets a chance to explain himself; James said he’d keep Moony busy until we’ve returned.”

I stook a deep breath once I sat down and grinned.
“Good ol’ Prongs.”

The thestrals pulled us through the winding streets of Honeydukes and onto Hogwarts grounds, the white snow everywhere made everything seem extra magical as the orange sky reflected on it. It wasn’t long before we passed the hills that obscured the school, my eyes watering at the castle’s warm welcoming energy.

“It never gets old, does it?” Lily said, gazing at it.

I shook my head, taking it all in.
“Never.”

The carriage stopped by the front gate, unsurprisingly my aunt Adriana stood there waiting for us.

“Welcome back, Momo,” she embraced me, and Lily, “Miss Evans.”

Lily hugged her back and gave a polite nod.
“Thank you, professor.”

“I look forward to the wedding,” my aunt admired Lily’s engagement ring, “Mr. Potter did well.”

“What can I say? He’s a keeper,” Lily blushed, her happiness surrounding her like an aura.

“That he is, congratulations,” Adriana nodded, and clasped her hands, “so, what brings you two here?”

“Well,” I put a hand to my lower back, “I wanted to see Regulus, if that was possible.”

“That might be a good idea, actually,” my aunt’s smile fell slightly, “poor boy has been looking grim as of late, can’t divine what it is.” She looked at me, “will you be alright to walk?”

I nodded and my face gave away my excitement.
“Lead the way.”

They both helped me up the pathway leading to the Entrance Hall; I took in the familiar maze of stairs and hallways and rested my hand where the baby was positioned.
“Oh the adventures you’ll have, my little one,” I whispered, “you’ll make us all proud.”

“That they will,” my aunt beamed.

We descended down to the dungeons and towards the empty wall, Adriana waved her hand; the giant snake revealed our entry.

“I’ll stay out here,” Lily took a step back, giving me a soft smile, “give you some time alone to catch up.”

My aunt stepped out of the way, and with a deep breath I stepped inside.

The common room was mostly empty, except for a few students working on their homework. I waved at those I recognized as I made my way around trying to find him.

He sat at the far end of the common room, playing a solo game of wizard’s chess. Hunched over, brow furrowed, deep in thought. He seemed tired, dark circles forming under his eyes. He looked slimmer than I remembered.

“Reg?”

His eyes darted towards me, his brows raised in surprise.
“Morgan.”
His posture straightened, slowly he stood up, eyeing me from head to toe.
“You look–”

“Huge?”

“No,” he shook his head, “beautiful.”

We stared at each other for a moment.

“You left,” I broke the silence.

“I’m sorry,” he looked to the side.

“Why did you leave?” I took a step closer to him.

“I was called away.”

“Reg, look at me,” I reached out for him, but he took a step back, “what’s wrong?”

He shook his head.
“Nothing’s wrong.”

“It doesn’t take an empath to know that’s a lie,” I moved toward him, “why didn’t you answer my owls?”

“Things have changed,” he shrugged, “you graduated and started a family, now I need to move on without you and forge my own destiny. I don’t fit into your puzzle anymore.”

I frowned.
“That’s not true.”

“You expect me to hang around as a third wheel forever?” He looked into my eyes now.

“Third wheel?” I scoffed, “Regulus, you’re my best friend.”

“That’s the problem.”

“Reg, please…” I reached out for him, taking his hand.

Suddenly my vision went dark, and images scattered before me: people in black robes gathered around him and his parents, the Dark Lord himself approaching him, a skull and snake tattoo freshly branded onto his left forearm. A kiss on the cheek from his mum.

The images left as quick as they came, we looked into each other's eyes; both equally flooded with emotion.

“You didn’t,” I shook my head, “please tell me you didn’t.”

He closed his eyes, trying to swallow his feelings.
“I didn’t want you to know.”

I closed the gap between us, wrapping my arms around him tightly.
“Why would you do something so stupid?” My whisper broke.

Slowly his arms moved to hold me, resting his head on top of mine.
“I didn’t have a choice.”

I wanted so badly to tell him about my vision, to tell him this course would cost him his life. But the words didn’t leave my lips no matter how hard I tried; as if the ancestors had muzzled me, preventing me from changing his future.

“Don’t lose yourself,” I looked up at him, “please; this isn’t you.”

He shook his head looking into my eyes.
“I can’t promise you that…” slowly his gaze shifted to my lips, “I think I lost myself a long time ago.”

Tentatively he leaned close, waiting to see if I’d pull away. Secretly, I didn’t want to though I knew this was wrong. But I hoped this moment would bring back a spark of hope within him; perhaps give him a reason to keep himself safe.

Our lips gently pressed together, his arms tightened around me; followed by a tug from within my abdomen, and the feeling of warm liquid trickling down my legs.

“Shit,” I whispered as a small puddle formed around our feet.

Regulus whipped out his wand and pointed at the mess.
“Scourgify,” the fluid disappeared from sight, he took my hand, “let’s get you to the Hospital Wing.”

“No,” I shook my head.

“No?” His eyebrow raised.

“Remus is getting smashed at The Three Broomsticks,” I winced, putting my hand on my abdomen, getting another cramp, “he’d never make it in time, we need to go to him.”

“You’re joking,” he took hold of my arms, “you want to give birth out in the snow? Because that’s what will happen if you waddle your way to Hogsmeade.”

“I know a shortcut,” I took a breath, “I need to go.”

“Wait, I’ll come with you,” he held on to me, “I’ll hate myself if anything happens to you.”

I gave a breathy chuckle.
“Yeah, well, you can just say it’s my fault.”

“Has anyone told you you’re stubborn?”

“Daily.”

He walked me out the door, we were met by smiles from the familiar faces standing on the other side. But their expressions quickly changed when they caught on to the situation.

“Oh, it’s happening!” My aunt exclaimed happily, “quickly, let’s get you off to Pomfrey.”

“No, I need to go to Remus,” I kept on going, “he needs to be there; I need to go to the inn.”

“Darling,” she followed us, Lily trailing behind, “who knows if you’ll make it there in time? We need to get you to the Hospital Wing.”

“I’ll be fine,” I gently shrugged her off as I slowly made my way up the steps.

Regulus sighed and pointed his wand towards the common room door.
“Accio Nimbus,” in a matter of seconds his broom reached his hand, “if you want to get there you need to move faster than a flobberworm.” He straddled it, and looked at Adriana, “hope it’s alright with you if I escort them back.”

She nodded.
“Go, I’ll vouch for you,” she turned to me and gave me a tight hug.
“Good luck, you’ll do great. I’ll let Madame Pomfrey know to meet you there.”

“Thank you,” I smiled at her before mounting the broom, holding on tight to Reg’s waist.

Once Lily was on too we sped through the halls and out to the grounds, the winter air nipping at our faces as the broom flew as fast as it could through the twilight sky. Thanks to Reggie we made it back in half the time it would have taken us to walk through the one eyed witch passageway.

He landed expertly in front of the business, helping me get my footing before pulling the broomstick from under us.

I groaned through gritted teeth as a stronger contraction washed over me, having become more intense during the journey.
“Merlin, this is worse than a bludger to the face,” I held onto Regulus, my legs feeling weak from the pain, “actually, bring one, it might help.”

“Sure,” he smirked, keeping me on my feet, “I’ll go to Spintwitches real quick and get on that.”

Lily looked at me apologetically.
“Maybe I should go in first, as a shield of sorts.”

I nodded.
“Might be smart.”

We walked in on the men taking another drink, Noah chucking his on the pot behind him when none were looking. He was the first to notice us.

Quickly he stood, beelining toward me.
“What’s wrong?” He looked at Reg and his eyes widened, “uh…” he pointed at his own lips.

I looked up at Reg.
“Oh fuck,” quickly I moved my sleeve to my wrist and went to to wipe my lipstick from him, accidentally overshooting with a crack as my balled fist connected with his nose. I gasped, “I’m so sorry.”

He reached up, with another crack and a wince he popped his nose back in place.
“I’ve been hit by worse.”

“Episkey,” Noah pointed his wand at him, and Reg’s nose was now perfectly straight.

Reg gave him a nod.
“Thanks, man.”

“What’s going on?” An inebriated Remus approached us, “what’s he doing here?”

Lily put a hand to his arm.
“Your wife is in labor,” she began, “Regulus was kind enough to fly us back here.”

“Back from where?” He demanded, “it’s Thursday, he shouldn’t even be outside of the school!”

Reg took a step forward, standing face to face against him.
“Did you ignore the part where your wife is in labor?”

I let out a scream, gripping one of the chairs for support.

“Alright, move you lot!” Hagrid ran past everyone to get to me, easily taking me in his arms.

“Over here!” Rosmerta called out, dashing up the stairs to her office.

She took cushions from her sofa and placed them atop her coffee table, Hagrid gently placed me on them.
“Don’t worry, I got ya,” he said, taking off his coat, placing it on me to keep me warm.

“Hagrid,” I groaned, “have you ever delivered a baby before?”

“Well, I’ve helped deliver unicorns before,” he began, “can’t be too different.”

“Good, because I can’t wait for Pomfrey,” I took a breath, “I need to push.”

“Right,” he nodded, looking a bit nervous. He stood in front of me and lifted his coat, his nervousness replaced with excitement, “I can see the top o’ it’s head!” He shouted out the door.

What sounded like a stampede came closer to us as my friends and family gathered around us.

“Bloody hell!” Peter exclaimed before projectile vomiting into a bin; Lily sighed and went to aid him.

Sirius grinned seeing his friend spill his guts.
“Well, looks like I won!”

“I’ll give you your prize later,” Noah kissed his lips and winked before walking to me and moving my hair away from my now sweaty forehead, “how are you feeling?”

I screamed as I pushed.

“Good, good,” Noah nodded, patting my head.

Remus stood next to Hagrid, his hand caressing my knee as he observed the birth of our child; a drunken expression of wonder to his features.
“Wow…” he whispered, eyebrows raised as he smiled.

Part of me thought it charming that he was so interested, the other part of me wanted to beat him with a bat for not letting me crush his hand as revenge for the pain he put me through.

Regulus seemed to have read my mind as he sat down on the bare sofa next to me and took my hand, which I squeezed as I pushed once more. His face turned red as he fought the urge to take it back, he looked at my cousin.
“Would you mind working your magic once this is over?”

Noah chuckled.
“I will, don’t worry.”

James’ face scrunched up as if trying to put himself in my shoes, I could have sworn he was holding his legs tightly together at the mere thought.

“Yer doin’ amazin’, Morgan!” Hagrid exclaimed, “Rosmerta, I’ll be needin’ some towels.”

“Right away!” She ran, and came back with what seemed to be her entire stock, placing them around us, “will these be enough?”

“Perfect,” he nodded and looked at me, “alright Mor, should be one more big push and yer done! One, two, three…”

I pushed as hard as I could, my other hand reaching out to the nearest hand to me, Sirius’.

“Shit!” He grit his teeth.

“That’s good, keep goin’!” Hagrid gently pulled on the baby, “almost there!”

My screams of pain were replaced with the cries of my precious child.

“It’s a girl!” Hagrid held her up, quite proud of himself.

"Knew it!" Rosmerta clapped, "I can always tell."

“Oh thank Merlin,” I breathed, exhausted.

“Remus,” Hagrid held onto the umbilical cord, “if you please.”

My husband nodded, tears streaming down his cheeks. He took out his wand and cleared his throat.
“Diffindo,” he said, pointing at the cord, cutting the connection.

I let go of the Black sibling’s hands.
“Thank you for your service, boys.”

“You’re welcome?” Sirius whimpered, taking his hand back, holding it to his chest.

Regulus snuck a kiss to my knuckle.
“You did awesome, Hot Stuff,” he gave me a soft, tired smile before standing; going to Noah for his broken bones.

Hagrid cleaned the infant up and placed her on my chest, smiling brightly.
“So, what’s her name?”

I looked at her as she fussed in my arms, making sure every finger and toe was accounted for; her eyes were a muted lavender- a characteristic of all Alexandrov newborns, and her head was covered in a surprising amount of red hair. Her crown.
“Clarisse,” my voice broke as relief washed over me and tears began to flow; I cleared my throat, “Clarisse Firenze Alexandrov-Lupin.”

James patted Remus’ back.
“Congratulations, man!” He smiled and looked at me, “and you… respect.”

“Is it over?” Peter groaned from the floor.

Remus laughed and nodded.
“Yes, it’s over,” he shook his head, grinning, before walking to me and placing a long kiss on my lips. “You just pushed an entire human out of you and you still manage to look beautiful.” He kissed Clarisse’s forehead, “she looks just like you… and normal.” He stroked her hair, “I wasn’t sure what would happen, with, you know…”

I frowned.
“I wish you had told me.”

“Well, I…” He shrugged, “I didn’t want to worry you.”

The irony.

“She’s perfect,” I gave him a soft smile, “our little firefly.”

He nodded.
“Let’s just hope she stays the same come the full moon.”

“We’re here!” I heard my aunt’s muffled shout as footsteps raced up the stairs; the door burst open, “we’re–”

Both my aunt and Pomfrey stood there eyes wide taking in the scene, a freshly delivered baby and a blood covered giant.

“Hagrid?” Pomfrey blinked.

He waved, a smile from ear to ear.
“Hello.”

“My stars…” Adriana gave a relieved chuckle, catching her breath.

“Well done, Hadrid,” Pomfrey came to check up on me, “oh but we’re not done yet.”

“We’re not?!” Peter whined.

“The door is open if it makes you uncomfortable, Mr. Pettigrew,” Pomfrey looked at him sternly, before shifting her attention to me, “alright miss Alexandrov, one quick push!”

I groaned and pushed; the sounds of Peter vomiting once more were accurate to the feeling of the afterbirth leaving my body.

“Beautiful!” Pomfrey smiled, cleaning up the area, “well done Alexandrov, and well done Hagrid!” She patted his arm, “you’re always surprising us.”

He wiped a lone tear from his cheek.
“I’m glad I got to be part o’ this special moment,” he looked at us, “ta think I watched you all grow up and cause trouble every year, and now yer all grown havin’ yer own little troublemakers.”

“Oh, Hagrid,” Lily approached him, teary eyed, and gave him a big hug.

“I’m sorry,” he hugged back, “I can’t help but get choked up.”

I smiled.
“Just wait 11 years, you’ll have your hands full again. I’ll tell Clarisse to find uncle Hagrid.”

“I look forward to it,” he chuckled, a blush on his cheeks.

“Momo,” my aunt walked over to me, “I think maybe it would be a good idea for you to go home, you need rest and I’m sure everyone would love to meet the little one.”

I nodded.
“Alright, but first…” I reached into my bag and pulled out my camera, “Madam Pomfrey, would you be kind enough to take a picture, please?”

“Of course,” she smiled and carefully took it from me, standing at the other side of the room.

“Oi!” I called out to everyone buzzing around me, “gather round, I’d like to remember this moment.”

Regulus began to make his way towards the door.

“Hey,” I called out to him, “you too, you’re not getting away that easy. Clarisse’s godfather needs to be in this picture too.”

Remus exhaled sharply through his nose.

Reg slowly turned to face me.
“Godfather?”

“That’s right,” I nodded, “I was going to tell you at the wedding but you disappeared.”

He looked at my husband, his expression changing from surprised to hardly able to hide his smile as he made his way closer to me.

Remus rolled his eyes.
“Don’t make me regret agreeing to it.”

“Oh hush,” I waved dismissively, “don’t ruin the moment.”

“Yeah Lupin,” Reg smirked, “don’t ruin the moment.”

“The both of you,” I looked at the younger Black sibling.

“Take two pictures, Poppy,” Rosmerta joined the group, “I want to frame one.”

“Everybody say family!” I smiled at the camera.

“Familyyyyy…”

Two flashes of light and we were immortalized on film. Me holding Clarisse covered by Hagrid’s giant fur coat, the boys huddled around Remus smiling brightly (except for Peter who held on to the bin instead), my aunt and Rosmerta waving at the camera, Hagrid standing proudly in his stained clothes; Lily stood next to Reg, placing a hand on his shoulder, giving him a reassuring smile- godmother and godfather ready for their new roles.

And for a brief moment in time everything was okay.
